Nine month old Batu Johnny weighs just 15 pounds. Thanks to the Mercy Outreach team and the generous support of donors, Batu was enrolled in the nutrition program, and has received her first package of Bennimix. Her mother Agnes is so grateful. "The Bennimix supply by Mercy Hospital Outreach team has increased my child’s appetite and nourished her. With three children to cater for, at times I only can afford a single meal a day. Thanks for the intervention of the Mercy Hospital Outreach team, my baby will have enough every day.”
Millicent Koroma, 18 months old, was examined in her village of Nyandehun by the Mercy Hospital Outreach team. Weighing just 16 pounds, Millicent is enrolled in Mercy’s nutrition program, and has received 6 packages of Bennimix over the past six months.
When the staff examined her, they discovered that she had a high fever, cough and appeared to be in serious respiratory distress. She and her mother were referred to Mercy Hospital for prompt medical intervention. As soon as she recovered, she and her mother were able to return home.
The newest additions to the CRC’s Child Support Program are 20 children who live in Fengehun Village, about 25 kilometres from Bo. The Mercy Hospital Outreach team holds a clinic in Fengehun each month, and now CRC staff make the trip as well, in order to conduct school and home visits.
The staff recently conducted a workshop and letter event for children in the village. Parents, pupils and teachers were present at this meeting. Topics included CRC activities, benefits of the program, the role of parents and teachers in monitoring their children and helping with their studies, commitments of parents and community, and alternative forms of discipline.
At the end of the workshop, the students wrote to their sponsors.
We first wrote about Baby Mamie in March. Mamie was brought by her mother to the outreach in Tikonkoh, and was discovered to be so malnourished she needed to be admitted to Mercy Hospital. After spending two weeks at Mercy, she was enrolled in Mercy's Nutrition Program and sent home. Every month Mercy's Outreach team returns to Tikonkoh to weigh and measure Mamie and hundreds of children just like her, chart her progress, and give her another month's worth of Sierramix, a nutritional supplement similar to Plumpy'nut. Mercy's Outreach Program serves eleven villages surrounding the Bo community.
We're happy to report that Mamie continues to slowly gain weight, and already appears much healthier and stronger. We'll be tracking Mamie regularly, so stay tuned!
