Helping Children Worldwide is a 501(c)3 organization. Our work to transform the lives of vulnerable children and their families would be impossible without the faithful commitment and generous support of donors. All gifts are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. We are committed to directing these funds to make the greatest impact possible in the communities we serve. An independent accounting firm conducts an annual audit on the reporting of Helping Children Worldwide's financial resources.
A NOTE ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF GBGM ADVANCE FUNDS. Some donations are provided by United Methodist Churches and congregants to the Advance Funds administered by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church (GBGM), as requested and managed by HCW for distribution to Mercy Hospital and the Child Reintegration Centre. Because we set these up to be sent directly to the bank accounts of the institutions in Sierra Leone, they do not come to HCW. While we can and do provide oversight on the use and receipt of these funds, we do not report these as contributions to HCW. We do capture the impact of these donations on the programs we support in various reports we share with donors.
Donations that are solicited by HCW that are designated for a specific purpose by the donor, when received and accepted by HCW, are utilized for the designated purpose. Whether donations come through the Advance, or through HCW to be applied to specific programs, HCW administrative and fundraising costs are excluded from those donations, and 100% of the designated funds go directly to the supported program. If, for any reason, HCW cannot accept a designated donation, the donor is advised that those funds will not be accepted.
HCW raises money to be applied to both programs and operations, including general administration, management and fundraising costs. While donations that are received and designated for a specific purpose are used exclusively for that purpose, just as GBGM and UMCOR do in giving Sunday solicitations, HCW raises funds with an intent to cover both programmatic and non-programmatic costs. HCW, UMCOR, GBGM and all nonprofit mission-centered and humanitarian aid organizations are required to expend funds to manage operations and provide adequate assurances to our donors that funds are shepherded with strict and absolute integrity. Consequently, HCW raises money specifically designated for programs and raises money that is permitted to be utilized for organization operations. We keep our ratio of administrative costs in line with appropriate financial standards for management of nonprofit corporations.
Radical honesty is an HCW core value. For that reason, you will always be able to find published on this page our annual audited financial statements, our annual reports and tax returns as they are available. Generally, you will find the Independently Audited Financial Statement is issued 6 weeks prior to the IRS 990 US federal tax return required of 501(c)(3) corporations, and the organization's annual report is issued along with an Impact Statement. The Financial Statements and Tax Returns are made available for download here and are also published on nonprofit oversight websites, like Guidestar. Paper copies of the Impact Statement and Annual Report are available upon request, and are mailed to our church partners, board members, constituents and interested parties subscribed to our publications.
