In the early spring of 2020, on the very day I retired from a 40-plus year career in Information and Intelligence Consulting, I was blessed with the request to join the HCW board. I am a firm believer in the statement “everything happens for a reason” - and this opportunity would solidify that belief and provide me with the chance to give to those who so desperately need my/our assistance. It was clear, the only answer to this request was “of course”.
It was shortly thereafter that I had lunch with Nabs - Emmanuel Nabieu. Nabs shared his personal experience/story with me. It’s a story of unimagined horrors as well as miraculous triumphs. It brought me to tears. I wish all could hear the story of a boy becoming a man who holds no grudges but rather is clearly focused on the future and the rescue of children who for a myriad of reasons lack a nuclear/family safety net. This one meal further strengthened my conviction to help orphaned children - first in Sierra Leone and then through the programs successful expansion of the orphan reintegration model to other African nations.
In September of 2020 I had the privilege of attending the annual Christian Alliance for Orphans (CAFO) conference with other HCW staff. Here I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the devotion and thought leadership of the HCW team. The team led discussions on the most impactful methods to help orphaned children via the transformation of a traditional orphanage model to a child reintegration design. I was so impressed with the out-of-the-box thinking and program design proposed by the HCW team. The interest among other conference attendees at CAFO and most recently among other African nations and child welfare ministries - both private and government run - is further evidence that HCW is a recognized thought and execution leader in the cause to help these children in need.
My professional experiences as a Program Manager and later Managing Partner at a Northern Virginia Intelligence Consulting firm led me to my current role as HCW Treasurer - a position which is critical as we determine the best allocation of limited resources in order to achieve maximum results. These results and corresponding impacts are of course focused on the children - who look to us to provide for their safety, education and well-being. All of this work is required to prepare the children for release into society as functional and productive adults, each ready to purposely contribute to their respective communities and assist others in need.
HCW is an organization which has demonstrated an ability to change course quickly yet with thoughtfulness as the needs of children dictate. I am honored and humbled to engage with the other HCW Board members and staff as we give of ourselves to those who most desperately need our assistance. My hope is you too will give as you can to this worthy cause.
