- Save the lives of 180 mothers AND their babies with access to reliable maternity care services.
At any given time 1 in 20 mothers die because of pregnancy or childbirth in Sierra Leone. The country has an estimated maternal death accounting for over 36% of all deaths among women aged 15-49. Pregnancy is supposed to be seen as a time of great hope, and a positive experience for all women. However, this is still not the case for most women in Sierra Leone, where pregnancy remains a shocking and dangerous experience for those many women living in extreme poverty and lacking access to reliable maternity care. Sierra Leone is found in the Sub-Saharan Africa Region, where women are more than 130 times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth than a woman in Europe or North America.

- Empower street-connected youth to change their lives, so that 35 families and 90 children break entirely free from the grip of poverty within 3 years, able to lead meaningful lives within the embrace of a supportive community.
Every day in Sierra Leone, we witness a heartbreaking sight - children and youth walking the streets, traumatized, and living in deplorable conditions due to extreme poverty. These vulnerable children face various challenges. Some suffer from neglect and homelessness, while others are forced to engage in odd jobs and beg for food and money to support their families. They are often seen in unhealthy situations, digging through smelly, unsafe dumpsites, and collecting scrap metals to sell for a meager income.

- Strengthen 180 vulnerable families with parenting workshops, simple business education, and microloan services to become independent.
In Sierra Leone, poverty, not death, remains the number one reason for family separation and its related life-long trauma. Because of the lack of reliable family strengthening services, every day, vulnerable families are torn apart and children are forced to the streets and subjected to institutional care. Over half of families in Sierra Leone live below the poverty line of $2.15 per day, and they struggle every day to break free from the stronghold of poverty which is causing them to stay stuck, separated, and dependent.

Helping Children Worldwide’s mission is focused on strengthening and empowering vulnerable children, families, and communities to achieve their wonderful, God-given potential. We partner with child advocacy and healthcare organizations in Sierra Leone to provide children and families with opportunities for education, family stability, reducing maternal and infant mortality, and iimproving childhood malnutrition.
Tackling Maternal and Infant Mortality: With over 60% of the country's population living in remote areas with very limited or complete lack of access to health care services, Mercy Hospital makes regular outreach visits to impoverished villages every month, providing them with critical health care they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.
Tackling the issue of street-connected youth: In addition to rescuing and reuniting street-connected children with families, HCW is bringing a new local partner to Sierra Leone. Zoe’s Empowers is an incredibly successful program that empowers young household breadwinners currently attempting to provide support for themselves, their younger siblings, young children, and impaired or disabled adults in their household. Your gift can be part of the solution to helping these young people in deeply vulnerable families to become safe and healthy, skilled for long-term success, and able to lead meaningful lives within a supportive community.
Tackling the root cause of family separation: In partnership with Helping Children Worldwide, the Child Reintegration Centre prevents family separation and its related life-long trauma by reuniting orphaned and abandoned children with families. To help these families flourish, the CRC supports parents through family strengthening services to build their capacity and resilience with parenting workshops, and microfinance programs where they learn small business and money management skills. Graduates receive a small loan to start or expand a small business. Acquiring these skills can truly help a family break out of the cycle of dysfunction and illiteracy that mires them in extreme poverty.
