Since January 2022, Mercy Hospital has been undergoing some infrastructure improvements and changes. Through the generous support of Floris United Methodist Church, Ebenezer UMC, Church of the Lakes, and Church of the Resurrection, Mercy Hospital looks almost brand new!
The fence around the building was completed to ensure patient security and a quieter environment for resting and healing. The courtyard of the hospital has also been paved, making it easier for patients to be moved from the wards to the surgical unit, and reducing some of the dust and are there contaminants that can enter the wards. Covered walkways have been added to protect patients during the rains. The Doctors quarters, which built by GBGM, is currently being furnished and a wall has been constructed around them for security. This residence has two apartments, one for Doctor Stevens and second for another physician. Lastly, construction is finishing up on a an additional water tank to provide clean, fresh water to the hospital and the new doctors’ residence building. (A tour of the new facility will be online shortly - check back soon!) If you have visited Mercy before, then you will see the dramatic changes that have happened! If you are interested in seeing these changes in person, please contact [email protected] to learn more about teams traveling to Sierra Leone.
Every Tuesday and Thursday pregnant women come to Mercy hospital to receive prenatal care. The expecting mothers wait in a special covered outdoor waiting area behind the maternity clinic and when there name is called, they are taken to the consultation room. Each mother is evaluated to make sure the baby is doing okay, and given prenatal vitamins, malaria prevention medication, and advised about safe practices while pregnant, such as sleeping under a bed net. Sometimes while the mothers are waiting, they begin singing and dancing! |
