In May of this year, Mercy Hospital lab personnel reached out to us with a request---could we possibly find an organization that would donate another microscope to the lab?
This was not an unreasonable request--Mercy Hospital's lab is one of the busiest departments in the whole hospital. On a daily basis, the lab receives samples from over 100 patients and runs tests for malaria, typhoid, parasites, and various diagnostic tests. Up until now, the lab has only had one microscope they could use to preform these tests, slowing down the process considerably.
So, Helping Children Worldwide reached out to an organization that is a member of our Together for Global Health network called Providence. Providence is a medical equipment and supply provider that works with humanitarian organizations worldwide to ensure their hospitals and clinics have access to the equipment they need to care for the sick and vulnerable. Within the day, Providence was able to connect us to Alaska Medical Missions, which had a microscope they were willing to donate to us. By June we had the microscope, and the July team was able to present this microscope to the lab technicians.
We are so grateful to be able to partner with organizations like Providence and AMM, and to be able to increase the capacity of Mercy's lab.
