Mercy recognizes outstanding staff

By Jinna Lahai, Mercy Hospital Administator

At Mercy, 2017 was declared a year of 'RECOGNITION AND AWARD'. This declaration was not just a mere spoken words, but has been proven.

In a general staff meeting held on Wednesday 5/6/17, eight staff out of 36 were nominated initially for outstanding performance. Out of the eight, three were to be awarded each for a month (Jan, Feb, and Mar) in that order. After critical assessment and finally votes cast counted, the under mentioned three names/staff were awarded for Outstanding and Quality Service at Mercy beyond expectation.

We were privileged to have Rev Charley in attendance within his busy schedule (Chairman of Board) who presented these certificates to the deserving staff. It was a well attended meeting and appreciated by all.
  • January: Mbalu Kuyateh (State Enrolled Community Health Nurse) - Mbalu works primarily in the Outpatient Department where she screens dozens of patients a day with patience. She has been involved in the new statistics process and has helped with getting accurate data. She also helps the Doctor and Matron in the small operating theatre where they do minor operations. Mbalu is always helpful and interested in learning new things.
  • February: Sidi Saffa (Pharmacy Technician)- Sidi is a very dedicated staff member. Although staff are not required to come to work until 8:30, he is often found in his pharmacy at 6 am, preparing for the day by organizing the drugs and making lists of those that need to be restocked. Sidi also recently underwent an operation. He was given three months of completely paid sick leave, but chose to return to work after only two months. Since his return he has been very active and working as though he did not have an operation (very impressive considering he is probably around 70 years old!). He is always smiling and willing to help others.
  • March: Sister Taiwo Sesay (Sister in Charge) - Sister Taiwo is a founding member of Mercy Hospital and has been working here for the 10 years of Mercy’s existence. During that time, she has been in charge of the Maternity Department and has never had a maternal mortality. Her superior care of mothers and babies makes Mercy a highly-desired place for women to deliver. Many women travel for miles, sometimes on foot, to deliver at Mercy. Sister Taiwo also, until very recently, oversaw the Outreach Program and ensured that people in the far out villages still had access to health services. She is a very committed member of the hospital team and well-loved by all the staff.
